Sundial Home

Before settling on Sundial House, this home carried many names — each inspired by the movement of light through space, tracing time and shaping the quiet rhythm of daily life. In its final form, light and shadow hold equal presence: one revealing, the other retreating, creating moments of calm, contrast, and ritual.
Our client, with his MIT architecture background, brought a deep intellectual curiosity to every conversation. Together, we pursued a rigorous conceptual framework, always aligning it with the emotional experience of home. The stair and circulation spine became the
project’s conceptual and spatial anchor — a vertical sundial marking the passage of light and time through the heart of the home.
Set on a through lot overlooking San Francisco, the residence occupies a steep slope shaped by historic cut and fill — an unsettled terrain that became both challenge and opportunity: to root the structure deeply, extend it into the hillside, and connect city to soil.
