Let’s face it, building in the Bay Area is expensive, and it is tempting to take the lowest bid and hope for the best. However, if a bid looks too good to be true, it probably is built on the backs of unfairly paid workers, unethical conditions and unsafe practices. As an industry we can no longer turn a blind eye. If you know of a situation where you believe any of these practices may be in place the Contractor’s State Licensing Board has resources to help.
It can be tempting to take the lowest bid without question, but there is an old saying “you get what you pay for” and in this case then some. We’ve had the opportunity to work with very ethical contractors such as Abacus Builders, AGC, Modern Craft, MT Development Company, Kotas Construction and Ron Perez Construction. Ones who pay their employees a fair living wage, have good working conditions and do amazing work. It is more expensive but in the end you will have a project that stands the test of time and is ethically built.
